80 researchers affiliated with Missouri S&T among top 2% in their fields for career and single-year impact – Missouri S&T News and Research

Sixty-five current and former faculty of Missouri S&T are among the top researchers in their field as measured by their career research records, and 15 other current or former Missouri S&T researchers were among the best in their fields in 2020, according to a recent analysis by Stanford University.
The Stanford study analyzes the number of research publications, citations and other measures of research productivity including career-long and single-year impact. The study classifies individuals into 22 scientific fields and 176 sub-fields that include science, engineering, business and medicine. Career-long data are updated through the end of 2020, and the selection is based on the top 100,000 researchers as determined by a composite citation metric known as a “c-score” (with and without self-citations) or by their percentile rank of 2% or above.
The study, titled “August 2021 data-update for ‘Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators’,” was published online Oct. 19 and is based on a “snapshot” of career-long research productivity as of Aug. 1. The analysis yielded approximately 186,000 scientists who are ranked in the top 2% of their fields. Missouri S&T researchers from 16 academic disciplines are included in the analysis.
“The breadth, depth, influence and career-long body of work of our faculty is impressive, diverse and reflective of our stature as a major research university,” says Dr. Kamal Khayat, interim vice chancellor for research and innovation at Missouri S&T. “The list includes many research-active tenured faculty who hold named or endowed professorships, as well as faculty who have retired, moved on or unfortunately passed away, but whose life-long work continues to influence current research endeavors.
“Even more exciting,” Khayat adds, “is the number of S&T faculty on this list who are early in their careers and are already making significant and highly cited contributions to their fields.”
The number of S&T-affiliated faculty who are in the top 2% of their disciplines for career-long impact increased by 25% over 2020, when 51 S&T-affiliated faculty made the list.
Those in the top 2% with S&T affiliation include more than a dozen Curators’ Distinguished Professors, two members of the National Academy of Inventors, one member of the National Academy of Engineering, and current or former directors of five Missouri S&T research centers and one research consortium.
S&T researchers included in the study are as follows, by discipline. Those recognized for their career-long impact in their fields are marked with an asterisk (*). Many of those individuals also were recognized for their single-year research productivity for 2020.
