Job Summary: The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking candidates for a tenure-track position in the broadly defined area of foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Key areas of interest include but are not limited to reinforcement learning and robotics, deep learning, large-scale machine learning systems, and trustworthy AI. We seek candidates dedicated to excellence in foundational research as well as high-quality interdisciplinary collaborative activities. This position is part of a department-wide recruitment effort in ECE with multiple positions related to autonomous systems. The new faculty member will also be part of an interdisciplinary cohort of new faculty recruited across the College of Engineering in the broad areas of computational and data-driven science and engineering, and robotics and autonomous systems. The faculty hired through this initiative will build on UW-Madison’s world-class core of interdisciplinary strength in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data science.

Responsibilities: Teaching undergraduate and graduate courses and contributing to curriculum updates and innovations; mentoring graduate students and supervising their research; developing and directing a strong, extramurally funded research program; participating in departmental and university faculty governance; and contribution to professional and public service.

Education: Required Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or closely related field.
Qualifications: The successful candidate will have an excellent academic record, a vision for an innovative, significant and impactful research program and the skills to implement it, and a commitment to high-quality undergraduate and graduate instruction and mentoring.

The Department currently has 44 full-time tenure-track/tenured faculty (more than 20% of which are women), approximately 350 graduate students, and ~1100 undergraduate students.
