Cross Country Tallies 12 Academic All-MAC Honorees – EMU Eagles

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Mid-American Conference announced its 2021 Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Academic All-MAC teams today, Jan. 11. A total of 87 student-athletes, including 12 from Eastern Michigan, were named to the women’s team while 51 student-athletes were named to the men’s team.

On the women’s side, Toledo paced the league with 11 student-athletes. Central Michigan had 10 named student-athletes while Bowling Green State and Ohio each tabbed nine apiece. Additionally, Miami and Western Michigan had seven, Ball State and Northern Illinois added six, and Akron and Eastern Michigan landed five on the list.

Buffalo led the men’s teams in 2021 with a total of 11 honorees, followed by Toledo with eight student-athletes. Eastern Michigan earned seven, Bowling Green State and Miami had six, Kent State and Ohio added five, and Central Michigan tabbed three.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Eastern Michigan saw seven from the men’s team earn the distinction: seniors Ronald Brandal (Huron, Ohio-Huron), Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth), Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), Noah Perrin (Akron, Ohio-Woodridge), and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River), and junior Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington).

Meanwhile, the women’s squad had five garner Academic All-MAC honors: seniors Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) and Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy), and juniors Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School), Sofia Ivanko (Buenos Aires, Argentina-St. Matthew’s College), and Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson).

In total, nine of the 12 Eagles named to list had a cumulative GPA of 3.5-or-higher. Additionally, six had at least a 3.9 GPA, while Chandler achieved a perfect 4.0.
