Education in NE Syria…new methods although difficulties – ANHA … – ANHA

The schools of the Autonomous Administration of NE Syria relies on three main languages, which are Kurdish, Arabic and Syriac, where students receive their lessons by their own language.
The academic year 2022-2023 began on September 18
According to the Education Body, the number of schools reached 4 thousand and 156 schools in 2022, in the cities, districts, towns and villages of NE Syria, in which 809 thousand and 123 students are taught by 41 thousand and 82 teachers from various specializations.
During the year 2022, the Body established 4 schools, and according to its statistics, 168 schools are partially destroyed as a result of the battles against ISIS mercenaries and the Turkish occupation, while there are 180 schools completely destroyed.
Three schools in the Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods of Aleppo also opened their doors to receive students, and the Autonomous Administration curriculum is taught in both Arabic and Kurdish.
Evaluation method
The academic year 2021-2022 witnessed remarkable progress, with applying evaluation method instead of indoctrination, but this one did not include all grades.
 In the academic year 2022-2023, the evaluation method was applied in all primary, intermediate and secondary educational grades.
  According to the new method, the unified exams for the preparatory and secondary certificates in Al-Jazeera region were canceled.
 This new method is based on evaluation, so the student moves from one class to another without undergoing midterm or final exams, and this evaluation takes place according to the behavior of the student his dealings with the environment by teachers.
 
Evaluation consists of oral and written quizes along with the participation in the class, where the teacher evaluates the students’ performance through the evaluation note book.
The main objective of the educational system in the schools of the Autonomous Administration; is changing the behavior of the student so that he can extrapolate, deduce and analyze.
Free study system
The free study system was announced in NE Syria for the first time for the preparatory and secondary certificates on June 19, 2022.
The upper limit for the preparatory certificate grades was set at 800 degrees, and the minimum for success was 320 degrees, while the upper limit for the secondary certificate grades was 700, and the lowest was 280 degrees, whereas the supplementary exam was conducted between July 17-25, 2022.
The Body introduced the subject of the Yazidi religion to the Administration’s curriculum in 2022, as it was prepared in coordination with a specialized committee from the Yazidi House and the Curriculum Preparation Institution.
The subject of the Yazidi religion for the fourth grade, while work is underway to prepare the subject of the Christian religion. so that the students and their languages receive lessons about principles of their religion; Islamic, Christian and Yazidi.
In a previous statement, the co-chair of the Curriculum Foundation, Maksab Al-Sayyah, said that the primary and preparatory stage will be able to get religious education, as the student has matured intellectually.”
He added, “Islamic education books will be prepared in the Arabic language for the Arab component, as for the Kurdish component, the books are ready for the sixth grade of primary school in the Kurdish language, and the books on the Yazidi religion are also ready for the fourth grade.”
Regarding books on the Christian religion, Al-Sayyah said, “We are working to form a committee to work on preparing the subject of Christian education, and the Curriculum Institution is fully prepared for that.”
He stressed, “We focused on each student learning his faith and religion, but in the secondary stage, we have another direction; that there be a book on religions and beliefs that includes other religions, so that the student reaches a stage of awareness after mastering the basic teachings of his religion and belief, and openness to the religions and beliefs of other peoples.”
 
Turkish attacks prevent students from studying
According to the 2022 statistics, the number of students in the Washo Kani and Serêkaniyê camps reached 6 thousand students, while the educational complex opened a new school during the current academic year in each camp, bringing the number of schools in the two camps to 6 schools, after the occupation deprived the students from their schools in occupied Serêkaniyê.
On (20) November 2022, with the start of Turkish warplanes and drone attacks on NE Syria, the Education Body in the Euphrates region was forced to suspend teaching in 19 schools out of 461 schools in Kobani canton; It is located in the areas of contact with the Turkish occupation army.
On November 22, the Turkish occupation destroyed the only school in the village of Goran, 20 km east of Kobani.
While thousands of students from the villages of the seam lines in Zarghan and Tal Tamr districts were deprived of education due to attacks of the occupation and its mercenaries, and their direct targeting of schools.
With the beginning of the academic year 2022/2023, 4 thousand and 51 students attended 75 schools for the three academic levels.
The siege on al-Shahba, Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh neighborhoods greatly affected the educational process
On December 4, 2022, the Education Body of the Afrin region announced the suspension of school days for a week, then extended the suspension period for another week leaving about 15 thousand male and female students in 72 schools and institutes without education.
About universities of NE Syria, there are 3 universities where students complete their studies, which are Rojava, Al Shareq and Kobani.
In 2022, two new faculties will be established at the University of Rojava, after merging a number of departments. These two colleges are the College of Arts and Social Sciences, and the College of Science and Technology.
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences includes the departments of “Kurdish literature, Arabic literature, translation, history, geography, women’s science, and fine arts.”
The College of Natural Sciences and Technology includes “Communications Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics Department, Chemistry Department, Science Department, Mathematics Department, and Biochemistry Department”.
In addition to the faculties of political science, agricultural engineering, petroleum and petrochemical engineering, environmental architecture, medicine, law, religious sciences, and education, along with three institutes; They are the Institute of Civil Engineering, the Higher Institute of Information, and the Higher Institute of Administrative and Financial Sciences.
In an effort to develop higher education, faculties and departments for postgraduate studies were opened in the fields of political science, history, petroleum, physics and chemistry.
Kobane University
The university consists of the Faculty of Arts which includes of the departments of Kurdish literature and Arabic literature, and the Faculty of Natural Sciences that  includes of the departments of physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology.
In addition to 4 institutes; The Institute of Educational Sciences includes (geography, class teacher, English, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology), the Administrative and Financial Institute, and the Technical Institute, which includes two departments; Mechanics and Electricity, and the Medical Institute, which is divided into three departments; Anesthesiology, analysis, and nursing.
Al Shareq University
The university includes faculties of “law, agricultural engineering, science, education, arts and social sciences” and institutes of “English language, technology, and administrative and financial sciences”.
The Universities of Kobani and Rojava graduated more than 100 students
In 2022, 73 students graduated from the University of Rojava from the departments of biology, history, Kurdish language, physics and chemistry, and 32 male and female students graduated from the University of Kobani, from various specializations.
