Gatik's Apeksha Kumavat is a Silicon Valley Business Journal 2022 40 Under 40 honoree. – Silicon Valley Business Journal – The Business Journals

The following is a profile of one of this year’s 40 Under 40 honorees. Join us in celebrating all of the honorees at an event on Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Unzipped Pavilion in downtown San Jose. Register here.
As co-founder and chief engineer of  the startup Gatik, Apeksha Kumavat leads the development of the company’s self-driving box trucks.
Gatik has one of the largest commercially deployed autonomous fleets in North America — on the road for multiple Fortune 500 companies. Kumavat is responsible for everything having to do with the safety critical decision-making systems for Gatik’s fixed route operating environment.
“The work we are achieving at Gatik — designing, developing and safely deploying autonomous box trucks that help national retailers, eCommerce companies and distributors move essential goods — is extremely rewarding,” Kumavat said. “This represents the culmination of rapid commercial and technical progress over the last five years.”
She says that sometimes she can’t believe the work she’s doing.
“The development of autonomous technology is the space race of our time, so it’s a huge honor to be leading the engineering team at Gatik. There is no other company doing what we’re doing. To become the first autonomous trucking company worldwide to operate daily, fully driverless, commercial deliveries for Walmart in their home state of Arkansas is validation for our technology.
“This milestone represents a groundbreaking moment for the autonomous trucking industry, because we’re not talking about a one-time demonstration — these are frequent, revenue-generating runs that our trucks are completing safely in a range of conditions.”
Kumavat says she got her passion for technology from her dad.
“I grew up helping my dad with his different ventures in telecom, infrastructure and hospitality across West Africa. This instilled in me an engineering perspective, entrepreneurial mindset and a global outlook from a very early age.”
