Two individuals with ties to the Missouri University of Science and Technology computer science department were inducted into the Missouri S&T Academy of Computer Science during the group’s banquet and induction ceremony.
The academy honors outstanding computer scientists for their contributions to the profession and their involvement with S&T students and faculty. The academy also serves as an advisory group to the computer science department.
Those inducted in October 2022 were:
Richard Hicks, who earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Missouri S&T in 1989, was voted into the academy in 2020 and formally inducted in 2022. He retired this year from IBM, where he most recently served as a solution architect. Throughout his 30-plus-year career with IBM, Hicks designed, implemented and deployed customer solutions based on application server technologies for customers in the banking, insurance, telecommunications and travel industries, as well as state government. His primary focus was on problem identification, migration and resolution in large, complex environments.
Dr. Bruce McMillin, professor emeritus of computer science at Missouri S&T, was inducted as an honorary member of the academy. McMillin joined the S&T faculty in 1988. His 34-year career at Missouri S&T encompassed roles on the University of Missouri Research Board and as the 2014 steering committee chair for the IEEE Computers, Software and Applications (COMPSAC) Society, S&T associate dean of the College of Engineering and Computing, and interim chair of computer science. During the ceremony academy president Karen Squires Foelsch presented him with the Chair’s Leadership Award in appreciation of his 34 years of exemplary service, dedication and leadership.
The Academy of Computer Science banquet and induction ceremony was held Oct. 20.
