STRONGSVILLE, Ohio — “Elf the Musical” returns to Beck Center for the Arts, where it was a major hit last Christmas season.
Based on the beloved holiday film, this hilarious big-elf-living-in-a-small-world comedy follows Buddy the Elf in his quest to find his true identity in a holiday-bedazzled New York City.
Featuring songs written by the creator of Disney’s “Aladdin on Broadway” and a book by the writer of “Annie,” “The Producers” and “Hairspray,” this feels and sounds like a sweet holiday treat for all ages.
Beck Center is thrilled to welcome to the Senney Theater stage a huge cast of local talent, including, reprising their roles from 2021, Actor Equity Association members Tim Allen (Beck Center’s “Matilda the Musical”) as Buddy the Elf and Gregory Violand (”The Scottsboro Boys”) as Walter.
This stage production is directed by Scott Spence, with musical direction by Larry Goodpaster and choreography by Lauren Tidmore.
The show runs weekends Dec. 2-30 in the Senney Theater in Lakewood. Additional performances have been added on Wednesdays, Dec. 21 and 28; Thursdays, Dec. 15, 22 and 29; and double performances, (matinee and evenings, 2:30 p.m./7:30 p.m.) on Dec. 10 and 17.
“Beck Center is always excited about offering our holiday musicals for a second ‘encore’ year, but we are especially thrilled about Year No. 2 of ‘Elf,’ as COVID struck our cast hard last season right at the end of our run, forcing the cancellation of our final week of shows,” Spence said.
“We’re so happy Northeast Ohio audiences get a ‘do-over,’ as ‘Elf’ is truly one of most genuine and fun holiday offerings out there.”

Ticket prices start at $38 for adults, $34 for seniors 65 and older, $17 for students with valid ID and $12 for children ages 5 to 12. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. weeknights and Saturdays and 2:30 p.m. Sundays.

Patrons are invited to arrive early and view the visual arts exhibition “Art Treasures 2022,″ of which some items are available for purchase at customer service. This free exhibition takes place in the main building theater lobby and includes the work of talented local artists including Beck Center cartoon instructor and licensed Disney artist Ryan Finley and many more.
Strongsville rocket scientist: Strongsville resident Eric Hansen is a member of a team of Cedarville University engineering students shooting for the stars with their senior design project.
They are working toward competing against dozens of schools at NASA’s 2023 Student Launch competition in Huntsville, Ala., April 15-16.
For the competition, 10 mechanical, electrical and computer engineering students will design and program a rocket that may soar up to an altitude of 6,000 feet, then land successfully, simulating potential exploration rockets on Mars.
Last year was Cedarville’s first year competing in NASA’s competition, winning second-best rookie team and the second-place reusable rocket award.
Team members include four from Ohio: Hansen, Jonathan Gregory from Hudson, Jordan Edwards from Marysville and Laurin Meisberger from Cedarville. The rest of the team is made up of mechanical engineering majors.
Learning to build a functional rocket requires the students to be creative and adaptive to new skills. The students will take what they have learned in the classroom and apply it to something completely different.
Working on this project will not only further the education of Cedarville students, but facilitate community impact as well. Over the course of the project, the team will get to teach over 200 other students. They will be going to high schools and middle schools to share their experiences.

• Monday Afternoon Book Discussion. 2:30 p.m. Nov. 28. The group meets in the library on the fourth Monday of each month. No registration required. New members are always welcome. They welcome all adults interested in reading and discussing great books.
The next discussion title will be “Women Rowing North: Navigating Life’s Currents and Flourishing as We Age” by Mary Pipher. Copies of the book are available for check-out at the circulation desk.
• Improve Your Wine Vocabulary. 7 to 8 p.m. Nov. 28. In this class, you will learn the proper way to evaluate wine by sight, smell and taste. You will also learn some card-carrying characteristics of popular grape varietals so you can more easily identify them.
With these tools, you can increase your wine vocabulary, better understand what kinds of wine you prefer and why, and take your first steps toward blind tasting.
