Virginia Highlands Community College students who earn associate degrees in computer science, exercise science or education can now directly transfer to the University of Virginia’s College at Wise to complete their bachelor’s degrees, under an agreement between the two schools.
These majors were selected to address the ongoing teacher shortage in Southwest Virginia and the Commonwealth, a rise in technology-based regional companies; and expand a highly successful and sought out exercise science program, according to a release from UVA Wise.
A requirement of the new admissions agreement is that the Virginia Highlands student earns an associate of arts and sciences degree in general studies with either a pathway in exercise science, education or computer science with the intent of majoring in the same subject at UVA Wise.

Virginia Tech has signed new memoranda of understandings with Virginia State University and Virginia Military Institute defining accelerated pathways to its master’s programs in computer science and computer engineering.
Both schools are participating in Virginia Tech’s accelerated undergraduate/graduate programs in computer science and computer engineering. The program enables qualified students at their institutions – including students not currently majoring in computer science or engineering – to take courses toward a Virginia Tech graduate degree as part of their school’s degree.
The program aims to reduce time — and therefore cost — to complete a graduate degree and facilitate an early transition into Virginia Tech’s Master of Engineering in computer science or computer engineering and the Master of Science program in the same areas. All of these programs are offered in Northern Virginia – where the university is growing student capacity leading up to the 2024 opening of the graduate-focused Innovation Campus – and in Blacksburg.
Students at the partner schools apply to Virginia Tech’s master’s programs during their junior year of college. They are able to earn their master’s degree in as little as one year after completing their bachelor’s degree.

The Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) with the Virginia Tech Innovation and Partnerships team will exhibit at the Consumer Electronics Show, the world’s biggest tech showcase, Jan. 4-8 in Las Vegas.
The team will host a pre-show networking event and an exhibit to showcase how the institute is advancing transportation.
“The Consumer Electronics Show is an unprecedented opportunity for VTTI to directly engage with existing and potential new partners at the world’s largest technology showcase,” said Zac Doerzaph, the institute’s executive director, in a statement.
