WESTHAMPTON, NY — A Westhampton Beach High School student has earned high marks with a new winning app.
Along with teammates from California, Westhampton Beach High School junior Rowan Tiska earned a first-place designation in a Congressional App Challenge. His team now has the opportunity to attend the #HouseofCode event in Washington, D.C., and demonstrate their application to members of Congress, the district said.
Tiska and his teammates created the app through the Applied Computing Foundation, which connects students and provides opportunities for them to work virtually on programming-related challenges and submit to competitions, officials explained.
Tiska and his team created the app, Berrie Basket, after learning that they all lived in farm communities.
The goal was to develop an app that would help farmers sell their produce online. The students worked collaboratively on their app for more than six months, meeting virtually every weekend. They are now looking forward to submitting to other competitions across the nation.
Aside from his interest in programming, Tiska is a member of his school’s French Club and student government. He intends to study computer engineering or computer science in college, the district said.
