Jeff Fuchsberg L’10 Named Director of the Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering – Syracuse University News

The Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering (CASE) has announced the hiring of Jeff Fuchsberg L’10 as its new director. Fuchsberg will contribute to the center’s strategic plan, overseeing the implementation of CASE’s goals while providing leadership and management of CASE’s day-to-day operations.
“I am delighted that we have been able to attract Jeff, an alumnus of CASE, back to CASE. Jeff’s accomplishments in the areas of innovation, entrepreneurship and economic development are truly impressive,” says Pramod K. Varshney, executive director of CASE and Distinguished Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. “I believe that his skill set and extensive experience is ideal for this position, and I expect that he will be instrumental in taking CASE to new heights.”
Jeff Fuchsberg L’10 has been named director of the Center for Advanced Systems and Engineering (CASE).
Fuchsberg’s career experience has focused on the intersection of technology, entrepreneurship and economic development. Before being hired by CASE, Fuchsberg served as vice president of innovation and entrepreneurship at CenterState Corporation for Economic Opportunity. Fuchsberg was primarily responsible for the Tech Garden incubator in downtown Syracuse, leadership in Central New York’s technology-based economic development initiatives, and oversight of some of the state’s premier startup attraction, investment, and support programs, including GENIUS NY, where he previously served as director.
Fuchsberg credits CASE with providing foundational early-career opportunities while he was a College of Law student, having been supported by the CASE Co-op Program in 2008 while he was working for a subsidiary of Welch Allyn housed in the CASE incubator. Fuchsberg then joined the company post-graduation, continuing his work with CASE in a role focused on university-sponsored research and technology commercialization while leveraging skills developed at the Innovation Law Center.
“I could not be more excited to join Dr. Varshney and the team at CASE, and look forward to continuing to scale our impact for our students and our regional tech industry.  Having been a CASE Co-op program intern myself, an executive of a CASE incubator company collaboratively developing technologies with SU and CASE project support and then seeing CASE grow into one of the most robust pipelines for talent at high-growth startups at the Tech Garden and GENIUS NY, I am keenly aware of how valuable the opportunities created by CASE are to students and companies alike. I am enormously grateful for the opportunity to be back with CASE at the center of it all,” Fuchsberg says.
CASE is an Empire State Development Division of Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) Center for Advanced Technology. The center helps companies identify faculty collaborators and establish joint university-industry research projects; cultivate ongoing relationships with industry partners, co-op companies and corporate prospects; offers affordable office space on campus to businesses through the incubator program; network with other high-tech businesses; and engage with local and state government and economic development entities.
CASE has operated on the Syracuse University campus since 1984, bringing together traditional academic strengths in research and education to promote strong university-industry interaction and generate positive economic impact across New York State and beyond. It currently works with over 60 companies, leveraging nearly $1 million in annual state investment with well over the required $1.25 million matching funds from industry. The center’s total economic impact, as measured by the state over the last 20 years, has been over $500 million, growing businesses and bringing new revenues, jobs and investment to the state.
“I am very pleased that Jeff is joining the CASE team at this exciting time,” says Duncan Brown, vice president for research and the Charles Brightman Endowed Professor of Physics. “The success of CASE will help Syracuse University leverage the investments that are being made in science and advanced manufacturing by the State and Federal governments. Jeff’s experience with start-ups, technology management, and intellectual property will position CASE and Syracuse University to be a leader in bridging academia and advanced manufacturing in the Central New York region.”
