The Integrated Security Seminar Series returns this semester with its monthly series of unique seminars focused on integrated security topics. The next seminar will take place Monday, Oct. 3, at 10 a.m. and will feature Shilpa Madan, assistant professor of marketing, as well as Mai Abdel-Malek, postdoctoral associate at Wireless@Virginia Tech.
The seminar series, co-hosted by the Integrated Security Education and Research Center (ISERC) and the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative in Southwest Virginia (CCI), focuses on integrated security. Each seminar features two speakers from different areas of research who delve into the real-world, salient cybersecurity issues impacting businesses and individuals around the world. The seminar will include a presentation from each speaker, followed by a Q&A session.
“The seminar series demonstrates cybersecurity’s cross-disciplinary, cross-industry impact,” explained Gretchen Matthews, professor of mathematics in the College of Science and director of the CCI in Southwest Virginia. “In one hour, attendees can hear about why a corporate board might need cybersecurity expertise juxtaposed with cutting-edge encryption and verification schemes for untrusted devices. There’s something for everyone.”
Anyone with an interest or stake in cybersecurity is advised to attend.
“Are you looking for a collaborator for a research proposal?” asked Matthews. “Have you been wishing you could add a security expert to your team? These talks are an opportunity for researchers at Virginia Tech and across the region to better understand the wealth of talent we have available in the southwest node of the Commonwealth Cyber Initiative.”
The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative is Virginia’s main access point for cybersecurity research, innovation, workforce development, and news. In this community, researchers find funding and collaboration, students discover diverse career possibilities, and innovations come to life.
The ISERC is a collaborative, multidisciplinary venture to promote experiential learning, research, and outreach in integrated security, one of the university’s Destination Areas.
During the Oct. 3 seminar, Madan will discuss her recently published research on facial profiling titled, “How you look is who you are: The ‘appearance reveals character’ lay theory increases support for facial profiling.” In it, she examines how artificial intelligence is becoming an essential part of humanity’s future, and how one of its more far-reaching uses is that of facial profiling. Technology is being used to “predict” what people are like just based on their faces, and this information is being used for critical decisions such as whom to arrest and whom to hire. Madan delves into the myriad practical reasons why people may support or oppose facial profiling, and how their beliefs about whether people’s appearance reveals their character plays an important role.
Abdel-Malek, a member of the Bradley Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, will discuss how her team developed a novel UAV-assisted user-agility support framework for next-generation cellular networks that enables trustworthy seamless service migration in a zero-trust environment. The proposed framework facilitates temporal authentication-authority delegation and proxying to enable preservice and all-party mutual authentication.
