Sophomore students in electrical engineering or computer engineering at Missouri S&T can receive scholarships, undergraduate research opportunities and mentoring to encourage them to earn master’s degrees.
“The most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers show that employment in computer and information research is projected to grow 22% this decade,” says Dr. Sahra Sedigh Sarvestani, associate professor and distance learning coordinator in electrical and computer engineering. “The industry needs engineers with master’s degrees and professional skills like interdisciplinary problem solving and communication. We’re addressing the need through this program.”
The National Science Foundation supports the effort – called the Accelerated Pipeline to Graduate Excellence in Electrical and Computer Engineering, or APEX – through a $1.5 million, six-year Track 2 award from the Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program. Students selected for the program will receive scholarships of up to $10,000 a year until they graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Those who pursue an accelerated master’s degree at S&T are eligible for a fourth scholarship of $10,000. Sedigh Sarvestani says the first of three cohorts of nine students each will begin the program in spring 2023.
The APEX S-STEM program builds on the success of a $650,000 Track 1 grant from the same NSF program. This program funded three cohorts of seven students and is nearing completion. Sedigh Sarvestani says they have received over $380,000 in scholarships to date. Each scholar has maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average. Program activities, which centered on undergraduate research, have had a 100% participation rate.
To qualify for scholarships, students must meet academic eligibility requirements, complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or refugee.
